What Is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing is the on-demand availability of computing resources such as servers, storage, databases, networking, and software as services over the internet. It removes the need for individuals and businesses to manage physical hardware and enables access to scalable, reliable, and cost-efficient resources, paying only for what they use.

This makes cloud computing a flexible and modern approach to powering applications, workloads, and IT operations.

Types of Cloud Services and Deployment Models

There are several service models in cloud computing that align to different levels of control and management. AWS identifies three main types:

  • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), provides virtualized compute, storage, and networking with a high degree of flexibility and control.
  • Platform as a Service (PaaS), abstracts the underlying infrastructure so teams can focus on building, deploying, and managing applications.
  • Software as a Service (SaaS). offers fully managed, ready-to-use applications delivered over the internet, eliminating maintenance and updates for the user.

On the deployment-model side, Google Cloud outlines three primary cloud architectures:

  • A public cloud is owned and operated by a third-party provider and delivers resources over the internet.
  • A private cloud is dedicated to a single organization and offers enhanced control, customization, and security.
  • A hybrid cloud blends public and private environments, giving organizations flexibility, scalability, and the ability to maintain sensitive workloads on dedicated infrastructure.

Benefits of Cloud Computing

  • Scalability – Quickly scale resources up or down to match demand.
  • Cost Efficiency – Reduce upfront hardware costs and pay only for what you use.
  • Agility and Speed – Innovate faster with rapid deployment and on-demand resources.
  • Enhanced Security – Built-in protection, identity controls, and compliance from major cloud providers.
  • Global Reliability – High availability, redundancy, and worldwide data centers for consistent performance.
