Course Objectives

This course covers the essentials for effectively leading people, with or without formal authority, across hierarchical lines. People Leadership Skills will help you gain a level of understanding of what you need to do and how you need to be to manage projects, lead change initiatives, and navigate through a political network.

Course Content

This 4-day instructor led course is intended to develop leaders in technical, line and middle management positions. You will gain an understanding of how to leverage your leadership style, effectively communicate and deal with conflict, apply the art of assertiveness to influence others, and coach and consult with stakeholders to resolve unclear issues and develop new insights.

1. Leading In A New Role (1 day)

  • Recognize your default leadership style – includes an individual assessment in threes areas
    • Missions – motivations and interests that excite an individual to action
    • Competencies – abilities and aptitudes that enable accomplishment
    • Style – personality and behaviors that make an individual unique
  • Understand the factors that influence your individual success in new roles and responsibilities
  • Develop an individual plan for success in your new role or organization

2. Active Listening Skills (1 day)

  • Learn and apply the art and science of how to listen – to pay close attention with the purpose of hearing
  • Understand the factors that influence listening success – includes an individual assessment in 3 area s– rational listening, emotional listening and body language
  • Recognize which listening tools to use for:
    • Active listening
    • Fact finding
    • Action planning

3. Assertion Skills (1/2 day)

  • Learn and apply the art and science of how to be assertive – to create ways forward that work for you and others
  • Understand the factors that influence your ability to be assertive
    • Passive versus aggressive
    • Stories
    • Choices
  • Recognize which listening tools to use when dealing with:
    • “Broken record”
    • “Three part I”
    • “Straight talk”

4. Conflict Management Skills (1/2 day)

  • Learn and apply the art and science of how to manage conflict – making constructive choices to resolve differences between people and organizations.
  • Understand the factors that create conflict and those that lead to conflict resolution
    • Stories
    • Candidness and responsiveness
    • Conditions that create competition
  • Recognize which listening tools to use when you encounter:
    • 4 choices
    • Partnering dialog
    • Compromising, Avoiding or Collaborating

5. Consulting & Coaching Skills (1 day)

  • Learn and apply the art and science of how to consult – to resolve unclear points or points in doubt by exploring distinctions and creating insights
  • Understand the factors that influence your ability to consult
    • Thought Partner versus Pair of Hands
    • Setting Goals
    • Providing Feedback
    • Reinforcement Techniques
  • Recognize which listening tools to use when:
    • Questioning
    • ABC Analysis
    • Metrics to Influence Behavior
    • “Ways of Being” Feedback
