Course Content

This course covers the planning, installation, configuration, and administration of VMware ESXi 5 with vCenter Server 5 management interface in a NetApp storage environment. Comparison of NFS and VMFS datastore pros and cons are explained with configuration of related network settings. The NetApp plug-in, Virtual Storage Console for vCenter 4/5 with 1) Monitoring and Host Configuration capability, 2) Backup and Restore capability and 3) Provisioning and Cloning capability is covered extensively with hands-on labs. Demonstration and configuration of SnapMirror and VMware HA/DRS for High Availability and SnapVault , OSSV and SnapProtect for Backup and Restore in VMware environments are fully explained and demonstrated. The class provides practical scenarios and explanation of NetApp/VMware best practices, performance tuning and troubleshooting ESXi 5 Clusters on NetApp Data ONTAP 8.1 7-mode. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to confidently configure VMware ESXi 5.0 on NetApp Data ONTAP 8.1 7-mode architecture and its components and explain the key benefits of NetApp’s vCenter-integrated Virtual Storage Console as an end-to-end solution.

Who should attend

  • Persons interested in understanding NetApp Storage System technologies including MultiStore vFilers and their integration with VMware’s ESXi 4/5 vCenter Server environments
  • Those responsible for maintaining a constant virtualization infrastructure connected to NetApp storage with Data ONTAP 8.1 7-mode, who are trying to optimize host, network and storage performance
  • Storage administrators with working virtualization environments or who are in the process of planning a VMware 5 virtual configuration
  • Virtualization administrators wanting to learn NetApp plug-ins for vCenter to simplify ESXi 4/5 host connectivity, provisioning and cloning, and backup and restore through ease-of-use NetApp wizards
  • Organizations considering implementation of Virtual Desktop looking for rapid deployment, more efficient storage technologies and resolution of end-user boot storms

Prerequisites

  • Knowledge on NetApp Storage Systems, VMware Virtualization, Linux and Windows Servers
  • Data ONTAP 7-Mode Administration (D7ADM)
  • VMware vSphere 4 or 5 Install, Configuration and Manage (or equivalent recommended)

Course Objectives

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Give you a better understanding of how to deploy a virtualized infrastructure within a NetApp environment
  • Provide a firm and practical knowledge of VMware services, protocols and connectivity options
  • Utilize NetApp vCenter plug-ins to ensure proper functionality and performance for virtual machines
  • Demonstrate NetApp Virtual Storage Console (VSC) for vCenter 4/5 to automate backup, provisioning, cloning and host optimization settings
  • Monitor ESXi hosts and NetApp storage through a single-pane-of-glass, with automated correction of virtual disk misalignment and virtual machine performance optimization through built-in NetApp utilities
  • Optimize connectivity to NetApp Storage Systems and MultiStore vFilers using FCP, FCoE, iSCSI, and NFS protocols via CLI and NetApp System Manager 2.0 GUI
