One of VMware’s new features, Horizon Suite, bundles three components: Horizon View, Horizon Mirage and Horizon Workspace. Horizon Mirage 4.2 focuses on several major improvements in desktop virtualization that allows a company to save money, increase productivity and reduce downtime with ease. This new version solves several problems that can plague companies who aren’t a part of the VMware solution.
Horizon Mirage is a layered image-management solution that separates the PC into logical layers that are owned and managed by IT organizations or end users. IT-managed layers can be updated without compromising end-user files and personalization. To maximize end-user productivity, snapshots and backups of layered desktop images enable quick recovery or rollback in case of failure.
Two interconnected problems companies experience are related to time and money. There is a major need to reduce downtime and costs and increase efficiency while providing high levels of security and information protection. Before VMware Horizon Mirage 4.2, a manual Windows 7 migration could last anywhere from four to six hours per PC. Using a data and settings migration tool drastically cuts down the time to two to three hours. Although the time is significantly reduced, IT resources are still being used to monitor the migration process, removing the PC user form their machine during the process. Horizon Mirage 4.2 allows one IT technician to handle one hundred plus migrations per day from one central management console. Downtime is reduced to only thirty minutes without IT touching the PC. Mirage has two options for Windows 7 Migrations: upgrade an existing Windows XP device in-place to Windows 7 or migrate a user’s profile and files from a previous Windows XP device to new Windows 7 hardware. To ensure that data is not compromised, Mirage 4.2 takes a full system snapshot of the system before the migration process, so a system can be restored if an error occurs. VMware estimates that an organization of five thousand can save over $1,000,000 in user productivity and $600,000 in IT time.
